Ratan Tata is one of India’s most respected businessmen. He is not only known for his business skills but also for his kind heart and simple lifestyle. He was the chairman of the Tata Group, one of the biggest business groups in India, and he always believed in doing something good for the people.
The story of the Tata Nano begins in the year 2003. One day, while driving, Ratan Tata saw a family of four people – a father, mother, and two children – riding on a small scooter in the busy traffic of Mumbai. It was raining, and the kids were sitting between the parents. The scene touched his heart. He thought, “Is there no safer and affordable way for such families to travel?” What if accident occured during riding? This simple thought gave birth to a big dream.
Ratan Tata decided to make a small car that would be safe and cheap — a car that even a middle-class family could buy. His goal was clear: make a car for the price of a two-wheeler, around 1 lakh Indian Rupees (about 1.6 lakh Nepali Rupees at the time).
Everyone thought this idea was impossible. Other car companies laughed and said it couldn’t be done. Experts said, “A car cannot be made for 1 lakh rupees. It's not practical.” But Ratan Tata was determined. He said, “We will do it. We must do it.”
He called engineers and designers from Tata Motors and gave them the challenge. The team started working day and night. They had to think in new ways — use light materials, remove extra features, and design a small but safe car.
After many years of hard work, in 2008, Ratan Tata finally revealed the Tata Nano at the Auto Expo in New Delhi. When he stood on the stage and showed the small car to the world, he proudly said, “A promise is a promise.” The crowd clapped loudly. The dream had come true.
The Tata Nano was the cheapest car in the world. It had four doors, could seat four people, and had a fuel-efficient engine. The price started at just ₹1 lakh. It gave hope to many families in India and Nepal who had never dreamed of owning a car.
However, the journey was not easy. After the launch, the Nano faced some problems. Some cars caught fire, and people started getting scared. The image of the Nano got affected. Also, many people did not like to buy a “cheap car” because they thought others would look down on them. Slowly, sales dropped, and the Nano did not become as successful as expected. People were reluctant to buy this car because in society, it was believed that, nano car is used by poor family.
Even though the Tata Nano did not succeed in the market, Ratan Tata's vision and effort were praised by the whole world. He showed that a big business can also think about the poor. He dared to dream differently and tried to make a real change in society.
Today, Ratan Tata is still respected for his honesty, humility, and social thinking. The story of the Tata Nano teaches us that success is not only about money, but also about intention and effort. Even if the result is not as expected, trying to do good for others is always a victory.
Ratan Tata once said, “I don't believe in taking right decisions. I take decisions and then make them right.” His dream to make an affordable car is an inspiration for everyone — especially young people in countries like Nepal, where simple ideas can make a big difference.
